Hard to believe it’s August and the summer is about over.  Hopefully you are taking advantage of working out at home in these crazy times we currently live in.

Because of Covid19, Beachbody held a virtual version of our annual Coach Summit. Every year we enjoy getting together with fellow coaches, hearing motivational speakers and working out with world-class trainers. The highlight every year is hearing the inspirational weight loss journeys of the Beachbody Challenge finalists and seeing winners crowned and awarded thousands of dollars. (Check out the inspirational stories of the 2020 winners and other finalists here!) 

Everyone who makes strides in their health and fitness goals is already a winner. Medical research shows that just a  5-10 percent weight-loss can result in a five point increase in “good” cholesterol. “This deserves applause as raising HDL by these few points can lower the risk of an individual developing heart disease,” according to the nonprofit group Obesity in Action. Losing 5-10 percent of body weight was also shown to decrease triglycerides by an average of 40 mg/dl, a significant drop. This level can further improve with exercise, a diet low in concentrated sugars, carbohydrates and fats as well as with reduction of excessive alcohol intake. Just this percentage of weight loss also lowers blood pressure, blood sugar levels, inflammation, and it helps with sleep apnea.

Does Sweating Mean I’m Burning Fat?

Love it or hate it, sweating during exercise is inevitable — but is it a sure sign that you’re burning fat?

Can Sweating Burn Fat?
Technically, no. You’ll probably break a sweat during an intense fat-burning workout — but the sweat isn’t the reason you burn fat. So even if you’re sitting in a pool of your own sweat, that doesn’t automatically mean you’ve just burned a ton of fat.

“Fat burning is a metabolic process,” says Jennifer Novak, M.S., CSCS, performance recovery coach, and founder of PEAK Symmetry Performance Strategies.

When you exercise, your body breaks down carbohydrates and fats in order to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — your body’s energy currency. Sweating, on the other hand, is a cooling process. When your core body temperature increases — either from exercise or from heat — your brain signals that it’s time to sweat.
As the moisture on your skin evaporates into the air, it takes some heat with it, which helps to lower your body temp back to normal.

Does Sweating Burn Calories?
While sweating doesn’t burn fat, the internal cooling process is a sign that you’re burning calories.

“The main reason we sweat during a workout is the energy we’re expending is generating internal body heat,” Novak says.

So if you’re working out hard enough to sweat, you’re burning calories in the process. Whether those calories come primarily from fat or carbs will partly depend on the intensity and duration of your workout.

“Typically, carbohydrates are used first,” she adds. “But because they’re stored in limited amounts in the muscles and liver, after a certain time period, the body must go to fat reserves to burn for energy.”

Do You Lose Weight From Sweating?
“If you hop on the scale after a sweaty workout, you may be a bit lighter — but it’s most likely water weight,” Novak explains. In other words, you’ll probably put that little bit of weight back on as soon as you rehydrate — which you need to do!

If your workout is long or intense, sweating may also cause you to lose some electrolytes and minerals. So when you’re replenishing fluids after your workout, you may also want to restore those electrolytes and minerals — especially if you’ve been sweating buckets. Sports drinks are one option for replenishing electrolytes, but they’re often loaded with sugar.

“Instead, look for brands of water that contain added electrolytes and minerals, without all the added sugars or artificial sweeteners,” Novak says.

How Do You Know You’re Burning Fat?
If you’re exercising for weight loss, you may be wondering how you can tell if you’re burning fat. Short answer: If you’re exercising at an intensity that gets you sweating, it’s likely that you’re burning some fat.

“But sweating alone isn’t a foolproof gauge for fat burn,” Novak says. “For starters, some people naturally sweat more than others. And adding heat to the mix — by exercising outdoors in the summer, or in a heated room — will speed up the onset of sweat,” she adds.

So if you want to maximize your fat burn, focus more on your level of intensity rather than your level of sweatiness. Your body favors fat as fuel when you’re working at a lower intensity (50 percent of your maximum capacity) or for a longer duration. As you increase the intensity, your body shifts to using primarily carbs because they’re quicker to access on short notice.

Do You Have to Sweat to Get a Good Workout?
You don’t have to sweat, but you probably will — especially if you do a challenging full-body workout that mixes strength training and cardio, like #mbf Muscle Burns Fat and #mbfa Muscle Burns Fat Advanced.

You’re probably going to be drenched in sweat when you’re doing these 25- to 35-minute workouts, and while the sweat itself won’t burn fat, it’s a great reminder that you just crushed a workout that’ll get you one step closer to your goals.

3 Tips to Lose Body Fat

1. Cut back on added sugar and sweetened beverages

Studies show excess sugar, particularly the high amounts of fructose found in sweetened beverages, can increase the accumulation of visceral fat.

Instead, quench your thirst with plenty of water; not only is it better than any kind of beverage with tons of sugar and additives, but your body also needs it to stay strong and healthy.

2. Pay attention to portion sizes

It sounds simple, but we all know looks can be deceiving, particularly when high-calorie foods come into play. If you’re not sure what a healthy portion looks like, try using portion-control containers to take the guesswork out of mealtime.

And don’t forget to vary your diet — quantity and quality are key elements to a healthy, balanced nutrition plan. Make sure you’re eating foods from all of the food groups.

3. Exercise regularly

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength training top the list of the most effective forms of exercise for fat loss, but just about any exercise can make a difference.

The key is to do it regularly and to combine it with a balanced, healthy diet. Together, diet and exercise cannot only help you lose weight, but they also prevent weight regain once you hit your goal.

Fruit Infused Water Recipes

Water is one of the best ways to stay hydrated.

And staying hydrated is important to help your body work efficiently and perform its best in your workouts, and to help you lose weight.

In fact, did you know that when you feel hungry you may actually be thirsty? Each of the recipes below is for one serving and takes approximately five minutes to make.

If you want your fruit-infused water to be super clear, strain it through a cheesecloth. To make a pitcher of flavored water, just increase the amounts by four or eight or more.

Stay hydrated and elevate your water game with these tasty variations!

Strawberry Kiwi Water
1 cup ice
½ cup chopped fresh strawberries
1 medium kiwifruit, peeled, chopped
1¼ cups cold water

1. Place ice in a tall glass. Set aside.
2. Combine strawberries and kiwi in a large cocktail shaker. Mash well with back of a wooden spoon or muddler.
3. Add water; cover and shake.
4. Strain into ice-filled glass and enjoy.

Rosemary Grapefruit Water
1 cup ice
3 slices fresh grapefruit
1 sprig fresh rosemary
1¼ cups cold water
1. Place ice in tall glass; set aside.
2. Combine grapefruit and rosemary in large cocktail shaker. Mash well with back of a wooden spoon or muddler.
3. Stir in water; cover and shake.
4. Strain into ice-filled glass and enjoy.
Blackberry Mojito Water
1 cup ice
½ cup fresh blackberries
3 slices fresh lime
4 fresh mint leaves
1¼ cups cold water

1. Place ice in a tall glass. Set aside.
2. Combine blackberries, lime, and mint in a large cocktail shaker. Mash well with back of a wooden spoon or muddler.
3. Add water; cover and shake.
4. Strain into ice-filled glass and enjoy.

Minty Watermelon Lime Water
1 cup ice
½ cup diced watermelon
3 slices fresh lime
4 fresh mint leaves
1¼ cups cold water

1. Place ice in tall glass; set aside.
2. Combine watermelon, lime, and mint in large cocktail shaker. Mash well with back of a wooden spoon or muddler.
3. Stir in water; cover and shake.
4. Strain into ice-filled glass and enjoy.

Honeydew Basil Water
1 cup ice
½ cup diced honeydew melon
4 fresh basil leaves
1¼ cups cold water

1. Place ice in tall glass; set aside.
2. Combine honeydew melon and basil in large cocktail shaker. Mash well with back of a wooden spoon or muddler.
3. Stir in water; cover and shake.
4. Strain into ice-filled glass and enjoy.
